This is probably the most challenging topic to write an article on because it is such a personal topic for people. However, I feel that I would be negligent not to write on a subject that affects so many of us. Since I am writing to the brothers, my words will be directed towards the issues we face as men in regards to our sexuality and sin.
A number of years ago, I was told about a young man who was serious about Church and his relationship with God. His college roommate talked about what a great and Godly man he was but said that there was only one problem—women. The man who loved the Lord also loved premarital sex.
Sexual immorality is something that most men have significant trouble with. Think of all the public figures and politicians who have recently been caught in sexual sins. Just imagine the number of men who are not in the public eye who are struggling in this area of their life.
Whether it is premarital sex, immorality, adultery or pornography—even men who love the Lord are vulnerable to misusing the pleasurable gift of sex that God gave to us. So—how does the man of God even begin to do what is right and appropriately deal with something that is so pleasurable and desirable?
The first thing we should look at is the damage that our immorality does to our relationship with God. Recall that King David was “a man after God’s own heart”. God loved David and chose him to become King, but when David committed adultery with Bathsheba, sin in his life escalated and he fell out of favor with God. Because we want to stay close to God and receive His blessings, we should do our best to avoid sexual immorality.
In I Thessalonians 4: 3-7, the Bible emphasizes that we should learn to control our own bodies. Have you ever felt that you were not in control over your body? Obviously, it happens to many of us, which is why the Bible instructs us to learn to control our bodies. The Bible gives us further instructions in I Corinthians 7:2, which states that to avoid sexual immorality that each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband and they should fulfill the sexual desires of their spouse. This is sex at it’s best because it is sanctioned and approved by God! Getting married to the right person—and being dedicated to fulfilling each other’s sexual desires goes a long way to avoiding sexual sins because you are being sexually satisfied in a way that is approved by the Lord. Single brothers—according to scripture, one way to effectively deal with your sexual desires is to seek a wife.
The last thing that I want to mention in terms of how to avoid immorality is to think about the pain that it causes others. I have seen marriages severely tested because someone was enticed by a sexual sin. I have seen kids who have to deal with the divorce of their parents because one of them lost control of their own body. It isn’t worth it—it isn’t worth the pain that it causes.
Brothers, let us learn to make progress in controlling our own bodies for your body is the temple of God (I Corinthians 6:19). When we control our bodies and avoid sexual immorality, we, then improve our relationship with God and obtain unlimited access to His blessings!
