For Our Sisters

No Ordinary Love
by Courtney Carey

I'm not sure when it happened. I'm not even sure how it happened. I just looked up one day and our society was in a place where the women in music videos were the representation of beauty. All of a sudden, the possession of material things and designer brands were indicators of a person's worth. Somehow our nation has embraced this and our children, especially our girls, are now being measured by what they look like and what they have, rather than who they are.

Girls and women alike are struggling with self-esteem. Sadly, it is becoming harder and harder to shape a healthy self-image. And when I stop to think about it, self-love is absolutely necessary if women are to have a fighting chance in this world. You have to know who you are, whose you are. and love it! Genesis 1:26-27 lets us know that we all were created in God's image. When you see yourself, you should see yet another magnificent creation designed by our Father in Heaven!

Learning how to love yourself is a process. It can be hard work and rarely happens overnight. For many years, I was a woman who thought I had plenty of love for myself. I had to realize though that if I loved myself, there would be some things I would not do or allow in my life. If I were to achieve self-love, there would have to be some boundaries-my moral code would have to be non-negotiable. I would no longer accept things for the sake of love or in the name of love. if I had love flowing within myself.

My process started with acknowledging that I didn't love myself the way that I should. Each person's process I'm sure will be different, but two steps helped me to make progress. Implementing these two steps might help you make progress too:

  1. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: You have to be willing to take a long, hard look in the mirror. and be honest with yourself. Self-love is not only about accepting what's on the outside. You have to see through your outer person and be okay with your inner self as well.

  2. Spiritual Surgery: Once you begin your process of self-evaluation, one day you will realize the negative impact that certain people have on your self-image and your ability to love yourself. There will come a time when you have to take out the spiritual scalpel and cut some people out of your life. II Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that when we give our lives to God, we become new creatures and should put away the things of the past that hinder us.

Significant life changes can be difficult. You have to remember to be patient with yourself, but once the work is done, I believe you will be on your way to something amazing... No Ordinary Love.
