Overcoming Storms in Our Life... Take Flight!
by Yolanda Carey

Have you ever been skipping through life with contentment, and then BAM!!! Out of nowhere a storm descended and rattled your joy. It covers you, sizes you up and shakes your peace of mind. My major storm arrived in March of 2004. It was the sudden death of my dear younger brother. He was a wonderful person with a heart of gold. I absolutely adored him, yet a ruthless robber took his life away in a matter of seconds. Initially, the force of this storm was so severe that I could not comprehend it. I was paralyzed for a moment. Then, we began to pray. Consequently, the Lord gave me and my family the peace, strength, support, and endurance to live through our storm. Two years later, the murderer was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The verdict did not bring my dear brother back to us, but we knew the Lord fought the battle for us. The storm lost its strength.

As women we constantly face challenges or storms in our lives. We are daughters, sisters, mothers, wives, Christians, caregivers, professionals, counselors, and the list goes on and on. Difficult circumstances can and do create obstacles and challenges in our lives. In the midst of the storm, the anxiety associated with it is, often, followed by a paralyzing state of mind. During these challenges, we truly do not know what to do to overcome our situation. Consequently, we unknowingly become stagnate, lacking the ability to progress towards an outcome. Without discernment, we feel like we cannot move, and thus remain still.

Our ability to weather the storm is enhanced by our maturing relationship with the Heavenly Father. Daily, we should pray and study His Word. When we realize the omnipotent power of God, we begin to understand that the battle is not ours... it is the Lord's! Yet, we have a responsibility too. We must do everything within our power to overcome our storms. The good news is we have the key. As women of Faith, we must learn to do what we can and let God do the rest. Without faith in the Lord's ability, we are in a hopeless state of being. However, if you are a Christian, you have the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. Your prayers to God, through his son, Jesus Christ, give you access to the most powerful source in the world. All of the resources you need to face any storm in your life are found with this access. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to "let go and let God." It reads, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Jesus Christ."

Instead of being anxious and doubtful when facing a storm, let us learn to live above the storm with the help of God. We can look at the golden eagle and use it as an example of how to deal with the storms in our lives. The golden eagle is the only bird that loves the storm. Utilizing the wind of the storm, the eagle rises and is able to push up higher. After the eagle finds the strongest winds of the storm, it relaxes by ceasing its flapping and uses the pressure of the raging storm to soar. Women of Faith, let us let us learn to soar like the eagle when faced with the storms of life... take flight! The Lord is the wind beneath our wings.
